John Kennedy photograph by Jacques Lowe

"Frenzy"

Tazewell County, Illinois, Fall 1960

By the fall of 1960, following the Kennedy-Nixon debates, Kennedy's crowds grew from a few thousand to 100,000 or more. Each campaign appearance created bedlam and huge traffic jams. Here, in Tazewell County, Illinois, the candidate is deluged by fans throwing themselves on his car and demanding handshakes which would leave him sore night after night.
